A fast, flowing 3-mile singletrack loop in Huntersville. Perfect for beginners, with berms, rollers and a pump track that keep it fun for riders of every level.
North Mecklenburg Park, known locally as "North Meck," is a fast, flowing 3-mile singletrack loop in a busy community park in Huntersville, just off I-77. It’s one of the best places in the Charlotte area to try mountain biking for the first time, and it’s still a fun, quick lap for experienced riders.
The loop winds through the woods behind the park’s sports fields. It’s mostly gentle, with roots, wooden bridges, tight turns and a few small log features.
There’s one real climb, which locals call Death Hill, and a fun descent to a small creek crossing. Reroutes completed in 2026 added new berms and rollers, so the trail flows better than ever.
A pump track sits at the trailhead. It’s a great place for kids to play and for adults to warm up or finish the day.
North Meck is a multi-use trail. You’ll share it with runners, walkers and dogs on leashes, so ride in control, look ahead on blind corners, and be friendly. Bikes ride the loop in one direction (see Riding Direction).
Most riders finish a lap in 20 to 30 minutes, so it’s easy to squeeze in a quick after-work ride or stack up two or three laps.

Class 1 e-bikes are allowed on trails. Class 1 means bikes that only provide electric assistance when pedaling, don’t have a throttle and don't provide assistance over 20mph. Any bike with a throttle or that can provide electric assistance over 20mph is not allowed on trails because of the safety risk to other trail users, and the hard to repair trail damage they cause.
The trail closes after rain, so check the status above before you drive. North Meck tends to dry faster than many local trails and is often one of the first to reopen. The loop is mostly in the woods, which makes it a good shady option in summer. The trail and parking are busiest on weekend mornings and during events on the sports fields.
Trail rides in one direction, clockwise. Easy to follow from main trailhead kiosk on your left as you enter the first parking lot. Trail ends on the other side of the same parking lot. North Meck is shared with runners and walkers so be courteous and careful.
Park closes at sunset, so no night riding.
Plenty of food, gas etc available around the I-77 exit 25 nearby and in Birkdale Village open air mall.
Bathrooms available next to playground/baseball fields.
First Timer Tips
- Ride clockwise. Start at the trailhead by the pump track and follow the arrows.
- Share the trail. Runners and walkers use it too, and some come toward you.
- Slow down, call out a friendly hello, and pass with care.
- Roots stay slick for a while after rain, so take it easy on damp days.
- Watch your speed on the downhill to the creek crossing.
- Make it a double. A lap only takes about half an hour, so many people ride two or three.
- Check the trail status before you go. Please don’t ride when it’s wet.
- Mind the kids at the pump track. It’s popular with families, so take turns and give little riders space. They will soon be passing you, and we are relying on them to maintain the trail for us one day ;-)
